Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock ~Matthew 7:26
Not all habits are created equal. Some have the power to hinder us while others have the power to help us. Thus, replacing a hindering habit with a helper habit will foster a stronger foundation for a well-lived life.
Even so, there are many reasons why we do what we do. Regardless of the behavior we’ve adopted, the reward is what keeps us coming back for more. And when we get stuck in the cycle of bad habits we tend to feel disconnected, disillusioned and drained.
Our key to success in engaging new behaviors will hinge on finding a new habit to replace the old one. Specifically, one that delivers a similar reward but has a positive, more life-giving benefit.
As we exchange one for the other, it will probably feel fake and foreign to us at first. But over time, our new habits have the power and potential to become a welcome new normal.
Take notice of how you feel as a result of engaging the new habit versus the old. Do you have more energy? Less guilt? Lighter thoughts? More joy? Knowing these benefits can help remind you of your progress and encourage you to keep going.
Mind you, this process has a purpose but it can also be fun. Try on as many new habits this week as you can. Be curious and take some risks. You might find something totally new and different. Our goal here is to build a better lifestyle brand that aligns more with our God-given identity and the life we truly want to live.
Be bold. Be brave. Be free.
Tell Me More:
- What hindering habit do you need to replace?
- Do a brainstorm of all the potential helper habits you would like to assimilate into your current life and make a list.
- Try and test each one? Is it realistic? Accessible? Are you likely to adopt it given a good effort?
