What is your ‘it’? You know, the thing you need to start doing or perhaps stop doing?

Truth be told, your ‘it’ won’t change itself. You will have to put some kind of plan into practice, and then actually practice it.

It’s been said, practice makes perfect. And in some cases, this is true enough but in the things of life—the tough stuff we struggle with and are emotionally tied to or intertwined with—we are shooting for a more realistic approach to change and that is, practice makes progress.

I think this is a better marker and a kinder measure of the hard work you are doing. Let’s start by setting ourselves up for success and to do this we will take a broad view of instituting routines, rituals, and roadmaps.

Whether you are more wired for rituals or routines, the first rule of any good routine is an accurate roadmap. One that will point you in the right direction you want to go and offer you key markers and guideposts along the way. Doing your due diligence in this task will go a long way so be sure to take time to map out your course of action first.

Next, keep in mind the best way to firmly establish the change you intend to make is to create a simple ritual or routine that consistently reinforces the better behavior and eliminates the option to return to the old one. Or at least makes it harder and less likely to do so.

Finally, the most important part of any positive change is to to honor the values that make you who you are or who you want to be. By aligning your core values to the change you want to make you will ensure a natural reinforcement for the routine and consequently the behavior you want to create.

But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer wh acts, he will be blessed in his doing. (James 1:25)

  • Create a clear roadmap for the change you want to make.
  • Outline a routine or ritual that establishes the new behavior while eliminating the option of the old one.
  • Be sure to honor the values that will naturally reinforce the new you.

Prayer is just a conversation with God. Talk to Him about what you learned and what you need from Him today.

Be bold. Be brave. Be free.
