Anxiety. For some of us it’s a state of existence. We know the undercurrent of stress is a natural byproduct of life but, come on! Sometimes I just want to scream, “Uncle!”
Left to its own devices, anxiety will push us toward habits and coping mechanisms that comfort our discomfort but only provide temporary relief. If we’re not careful, these habits can cripple and confine us to small living as we prefer the safety of indulging our fears over the risk of experiencing failure.
In these times, Isaiah 41:10 offers a profound reminder: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
What is weighing on your heart today? Take a moment to identify a part of your life that feels overwhelming. Where do you turn when anxiety strikes? Perhaps it’s food, alcohol, scrolling or shopping. Maybe it’s something else that takes your mind off things, even if only briefly.
Yet, deep down, these things don’t ease the fear—they just cover it up.
God invites you to come to Him instead. To trust Him with your pain and worry. To lean on His power to help you navigate the stressors of this life, especially the craving for comfort. Have you tried to invite Him into your craving when it hits?
I know this sounds strange, but when I ask people this question they typically say no. And I think I know the answer. We don’t always want to change. We like our habits even if they do more harm than good.
But unlike quick fixes, God offers true peace and strength in the painful and precarious moments of craving. Try spending a few moments in prayer about your biggest struggle, your toughest craving.
Prayer is simply talking with God, opening up about your worries and listening for His reassurance. Ask Him to show you His perspective on your situation and to give you the courage to release your anxieties to Him.
When you feel anxiety rising, remember that God promises to be with you, to strengthen you for the fight. Lean on this promise and trust that His strength is greater than any crutch or temporary relief you tend to chase. With His help, you can let go of negative coping mechanisms and find comfort in the lasting peace He provides.
